RHOÉ CROSSING

Use of LED lighting as a means of improving zebra crossing safety
Draft of Rhoé Crossing system

THE PROBLEM

INSUFFICIENT AND INDISTINGUISHABLE SIGNALING

The percentages of pedestrian-related road accidents in Greece are among the highest in the European Union countries (E.U.). One of the most crucial factors that contribute to these high percentages is the insufficient and non-distinguishable signaling in the transit area, both for the driver and the pedestrian. We offer an efficient and cost-effective solution that addresses these problems accompanied by a proposal for its implementation in Thessaloniki.

THE SOLUTION

INSTALLATION OF LED LIGHTING FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF SAFETY

We propose the installation of our system in the most precarious crossings (black spots) of our city. Our system consists of two parts, the operational and the energy dependency part. The first part is about the LED lights installation in both ends of the zebra crossing, lengthwise and it is divided into three stages. Firstly, the LED lights emit green light and at the same time the pedestrian crossing signal turns green. When the signal turns red the LED lights emit red light and they gradually turn off.

The second part is about the power supply of the system. We suggest the use of two solar panels, one on each pavement, and a battery on one side to store the energy. When the sun sets, the system relies on the power that has been saved. In case of solar energy inadequacy, its operation will be ensured by using the city’s power grid via a connection to the nearby traffic light.

THE ADVANTAGES

OPTIMIZING QUALITY OF LIFE

We expect that the installation of our system will significantly improve the safety standards of pedestrian crossings. Naturally, this would lead to an increase in comfort level that both the pedestrians and the drivers experience and as a result the quality of life in the urban centres will be improved.
