THE PROBLEM

The European Green Deal aims to transform climate challenges into sustainable opportunities, with a particular focus on transportation. As part of this ambitious goal, there's a pressing need to rethink urban mobility, especially concerning the integration of autonomous driving technologies into existing transportation infrastructure, to address inefficiencies and ensure the safe and efficient coexistence of conventional and autonomous vehicles.

THE PROJECT

Street21 will address the conceptual framework and technical content for an efficient road street design, focusing on urban at-grade intersections, concerning the impacts of mixed traffic involving both autonomous and conventional vehicles.

The project aims to develop innovative road design and traffic management strategies, thereby enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in urban mobility. This strategic approach positions the initiative as a pivotal facilitator in transforming smart cities, adapting urban infrastructures for the future of transportation.

The main objectives of the STREET21 project are the following:

1.

Assess the landscape of automated vehicles (AVs) to identify enablers and barriers impacting their integration

2.

Gather data on driving behaviors at urban intersections to better understand current traffic dynamics

3.

Create models to simulate and predict the driving behavior of automated vehicles

4.

Develop guidelines for the design of intersections during the transition period accommodating both conventional and automated vehicles

OUR ROLE

  • Contribute to the identification of best practices and the creation of a comprehensive literature review.

  • Collaborate on the creation of innovative traffic management and simulation algorithms.

  • Leverage our expertise in e-mobility to support the integration of AVs with current infrastructure.

  • Lead the exploitation of the project results and explore potential commercial applications of these technologies.
