THE PROJECT

Waterborne transportation currently accounts for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, escalating to 13.5% in the EU, with a potential 50-250% increase by 2050. Consequently, the International Maritime Organization has set a target of achieving a 50% reduction in emissions by 2050.

Despite the recognition of electric vessels as a sustainable solution, persistent concerns about extended charging times and existing infrastructure limitations prevail.

SwapWave tackles this challenge by introducing battery swapping technology – replacing depleted vessel batteries with fully charged ones. Battery swapping provides, reduced downtimes, flexible charging infrastructure, modular energy storage, simplified maintenance, and upgrades, as well as grid balancing and energy management.

The project aims to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study of integrating battery swapping technology for electric vessels operating in coastal and short-sea-shipping routes within the Ionian Islands, focusing on optimizing route infrastructure.

The main objectives of the SwapWave project are the following:

1.

Support the mission of decarbonizing the waterborne sector by providing valuable insights into the transition from conventional to zero-emission vessels within coastal shipping environments.

2.

Evaluate the technical and economic viability of deploying battery swapping technology for electric vessels in the Ionian Islands.

3.

Enhance communication regarding the benefits of battery swapping, with the overarching goal of fortifying the solution's competitive standing.

4.

Develop a model for the strategic placement of battery swapping stations, optimizing their locations for efficiency and accessibility.

5.

Investigate the potential expansion of the proposed solution to coastal routes in Norway.

OUR ROLE

  • Support the mission of decarbonizing the waterborne sector by providing valuable insights into the transition from conventional to zero-emission vessels within coastal shipping environments.

  • Evaluate the technical and economic viability of deploying battery swapping technology for electric vessels in the Ionian Islands.
